Ford's famous Woodies were unlike virtually any other production automobiles of their era. While most manufacturers abandoned extensive wood construction following World War II, Ford
continued producing genuine wood-bodied station wagons using traditional coach building techniques. Each body was handcrafted at Ford's renowned Iron Mountain, Michigan wood products facility using carefully selected Hard Maple for the structural framework and beautifully finished Mahogany for the body panels. The completed wooden bodies were then shipped to Ford assembly plants where they were fitted to Super Deluxe chassis before final assembly. Powered by Ford's dependable 239-cubic-inch Flathead V8 producing 100 horsepower and paired with a three-speed manual transmission, the Woody Wagon combined dependable performance with exceptional passenger and cargo capacity. It became the vehicle of choice for growing American families, country estates, resorts, and outdoor enthusiasts, helping establish the station wagon as both a practical and prestigious automobile. Today, the 1946–1948 Ford Super Deluxe Woody Wagon remains one of the most recognizable and collectible American automobiles ever produced. A Remarkable American Original
The 1949 Powell P-81 presented here is an exceptionally preserved example of American two-wheel history. Unlike many surviving motorcycles of this era that have been extensively restored or modified, this P-81 remains in original, unrestored condition.
The motorcycle has been carefully preserved as an authentic representation of how a Powell P-81 appeared during its era. It remains operational and runs and drives, making it not only an important historical artifact but also a living example of American mechanical craftsmanship. This particular Powell has been in the present owner’s collection for many years. The present owner is the third owner of this remarkable specimen.
Original Documentation
Adding substantially to the historical significance of this motorcycle is its surviving original factory literature.
Included with the P-81 are:
-Original Powell Instruction Manual for the Model P-81
-Powell Factory Shop Manual
The survival of original factory literature with an unrestored motorcycle provides valuable documentation of the machine as it was delivered and serviced during its era. For a collector and museum-quality vehicle, original factory documentation is an important part of establishing provenance and preserving the history surrounding the machine.
A Survivor of the Postwar Era
Its original condition is itself part of its history. Every original finish, component, marking, and characteristic that has survived contributes to the story of the motorcycle. Rather than recreating what a new Powell looked like, this motorcycle documents what an actual Powell looked like after decades of real-world existence. For historians and collectors, an authentic survivor can provide information that may be lost when an example is completely restored.
National-Level Recognition
This Powell P-81 has received significant recognition at the national level through the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA).
2014 AACA — HPOF Certification
2015 AACA — HPOF Certification
HPOF stands for Historic Preservation of Original Features.
These certifications are particularly meaningful for this motorcycle because its greatest distinction is its originality. Recognition through the AACA HPOF program acknowledges the importance of preserving historic vehicles in their original, authentic state rather than automatically restoring them.
Receiving HPOF Certification in two consecutive years, 2014 and 2015, is an important part of this Powell’s documented collection history.
Preservation Over Restoration
This motorcycle illustrates an important principle of historic vehicle collecting:
Preservation can be more historically significant than restoration. A restoration attempts to return a vehicle to a particular appearance, often representing how it may have looked when new. A preserved original vehicle, however, retains the evidence of its actual life. This Powell has been allowed to retain that history. Its unrestored condition, original factory documentation, operational status, and national-level AACA recognition make it an unusually compelling example of American two-wheel preservation.
Ownership & Provenance
The current owner is the third owner of this Powell P-81. The motorcycle has been part of the present owner’s collection for many years and has been maintained as an original collector specimen. It retains an Illinois title and remains a functioning motorcycle that runs and drives. The combination of documented ownership, surviving original factory literature, operational condition, and preservation
makes this P-81 an important example for future generations of collectors and historians.

Lot 12:1957 Forall Scooter Unrestored Original
From the Don Henley Collection
1957 FORALL SCOOTER
An Artifact of Springfield, Illinois, Manufacturing History
HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
The FORALL scooter was produced from 1957 through 1959 by Bob Baugh and the Illinois Foundry in
Springfield, Illinois. Baugh was a co-owner of the Illinois Foundry, which was apparently one of the largest foundries in Illinois during the mid-to-late 1950s. By this period, however, the foundry had fallen on difficult times, and much of its property was reportedly sitting idle. According to the history associated with the FORALL, Baugh encountered the remains of a Doodlebug scooter around Springfield. He borrowed the scooter from its owner with the intention of using it as the foundation for developing a scooter of his own. Baugh brought the Doodlebug to the Illinois Foundry and made a number of modifications to its design. The resulting FORALL was approximately one-third larger than the Doodlebug. Some Doodlebug components were retained and could be used as direct bolt-on components on early FORALL scooters, including the handlebars and gasoline tank. According to the story, Baugh later expressed his appreciation to the owner of the original Doodlebug by presenting him with the first FORALL scooter produced from the line.
DISTINCTIVE CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN
The FORALL possesses several features that distinguish it from the Doodlebug and other small scooters of its period. A particularly notable feature is its cast-aluminum floorboard. Later FORALL models were also equipped with a cast-aluminum belt guard. Both the floorboard and belt guard are constructed of cast aluminum, demonstrating the use of the Illinois Foundry's manufacturing capabilities in the scooter's construction. The handlebars and gooseneck were adapted from bicycle components and are chrome plated. These combinations of foundry-produced components and adapted bicycle parts contribute to the FORALL's distinctive appearance and mechanical character.
CONTROL SYSTEM
The control arrangement of the FORALL differs somewhat from that of the Doodlebug and may initially seem unusual to a modern rider.
Control arrangement:
-Throttle — Left side
-Brake — Right side
The controls are not spring operated. Consequently, both the throttle and brake must be manually opened and closed by the operator. The FORALL utilizes bicycle shift-lever-style controllers, an unusual but characteristic feature of the scooter. The rear band brake is constructed from a section of V-belt that rubs against the rear hub.
ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN
The FORALL is powered by a 2½-horsepower Tecumseh engine. The engine is equipped with a centrifugal clutch connected to a countershaft. This basic arrangement is similar to the drivetrain configuration used on the Doodlebug scooter. The engine represents an interesting period in the history of American small-engine manufacturing during the late 1950s.
PRODUCTION AND HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The FORALL had a relatively brief production history, manufactured from approximately 1957 through 1959. It is estimated that approximately 1,800 to 2,500 FORALL scooters were produced. The original selling price was $189. Although its production period was short, the FORALL represents an intriguing example of mid-century American manufacturing ingenuity. Its development was closely connected to the Springfield, Illinois, industrial community and to the capabilities of the Illinois Foundry. The scooter also illustrates the creative reuse and adaptation of existing components that was characteristic of small-scale American manufacturing during the 1950s.

A REMARKABLE PIECE OF SPRINGFIELD HISTORY
The FORALL scooter is more than a small motor scooter from the 1950s. It is a tangible representation of a particular period in Springfield's industrial history, when foundries, machine shops, and small manufacturers possessed the ability to transform existing designs and components into entirely new products. This FORALL scooter is a running, complete, and totally original specimen, preserving its original character and features from the period in which it was manufactured. The FORALL received HPOF certification in 2017 from the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA). HPOF stands for “Historic Preservation of Original Features,” a national AACA program recognizing vehicles that retain significant original features and components. Its short production run, limited estimated numbers, distinctive cast-aluminum construction, unusual control system, connection to the Doodlebug, 2017 AACA HPOF certification, and its exceptional state of completeness and originality make the FORALL an especially interesting artifact of American small-engine and scooter history. The FORALL stands as an example of the ingenuity, resourcefulness, and manufacturing experimentation that characterized the late 1950s—and as a unique piece of Springfield, Illinois, heritage

Production Era: 1935–1936
One of America's Most Beautiful and Exclusive Pre-War Masterpieces
A true legend of the Art Deco era, this 1936 Auburn 852 Supercharged Boattail Speedster represents one of the rarest, most visually arresting, and performance-minded American automobiles ever constructed. Conceived by the brilliant, 30-year-old designer Gordon Buehrig, the 852 Speedster was styled to evoke the sweeping lines of a luxury racing yacht while delivering record-shattering engineering. Built for only two model years (the identical 851 in 1935 and the 852 in 1936), it is estimated that fewer than 150 genuine Supercharged Speedsters were originally built, with only a fraction surviving today under the intense stewardship of elite collectors.
Highlights

-One of only approximately 150 original supercharged examples built
-The ultimate performance and luxury flagship of the Auburn Automobile Company
-280 cu. in. Lycoming L-Head Straight-8 engine
-Schweitzer-Cummins Centrifugal Supercharger producing a formidable 150 horsepower
-Three-speed manual transmission paired with a Columbia Dual-Ratio rear axle (providing 6 forward speeds)

Exceptional Provenance
This remarkable 852 Speedster boasts an exceptional, fully documented history, having spent decades shielded within a prominent East Coast private collection before transitioning to its current owner. Recognizing its extraordinary level of authenticity, the vehicle underwent a comprehensive, multi-year, no-expense-spared restoration completed by a marquee specialist. Every effort was made to preserve and restore original components, ensuring the powertrain, body panels, and supercharger assembly retain their factory-born numbers and stampings. The result is an authentic, striking, and investment-grade presentation of pre-war American opulence.
Historical Significance
The Boattail Speedster’s iconic, rakish rear styling remains an enduring triumph of industrial art, famously influencing decades of automotive design—from the Corvette Stingray to the Buick Riviera. Powered by the legendary Lycoming straight-eight, it was a technological tour de force featuring vacuum-controlled "Dual Ratio" gearing that allowed drivers to flip a steering-wheel lever for low-rpm highway cruising. Born during the depths of the Great Depression, the Speedster was never intended as a mass-market vehicle. It was built as a halo car to capture the imagination of the world, making it the definitive "Hollywood Car" of the 1930s and a Holy Grail for modern collectors.
Auction Opportunity
Genuine, certified Auburn Speedsters are rarely offered publicly, and examples with this caliber of pedigree and mechanical clarity are scarcer still. Combining a breathtaking Gordon Buehrig design, numbers-matching supercharged power, and supreme historical significance, serial number 32657E represents a blue-chip acquisition. Whether destined to anchor an elite private museum, compete at global concours d'elegance events, or partake in premier vintage rallies, this iconic Auburn stands as a pinnacle of American automotive history.

One of America's Most Beautiful and Innovative Pre-War Masterpieces
A revolutionary milestone in industrial design, this 1937 Cord 812 Supercharged Convertible Phaeton represents one of the most technologically advanced and stylistically radical American automobiles ever created. Styled by legendary designer Gordon Buehrig, the Cord's iconic "coffin-nose" front styling completely eliminated the traditional vertical radiator grille, replacing it with sleek horizontal louvers that wrapped around the hood. Built for only two model years (the 810 in 1936 and the updated 812 in 1937), this factory-supercharged Phaeton is a breathtaking survivor from the twilight era of the Auburn Automobile Company.

Exceptional Provenance
This phenomenal 812 Phaeton features an outstanding, uninterrupted history file verifying its continuous care. Shielded for decades inside a prominent climate-controlled collection, the car emerged to undergo a painstaking, no-expense-spared, four-year high-quality restoration. Completed by a marquee specialist, every mechanical and structural component was brought back to factory specifications. Tremendous care was taken to maintain its numbers-matching Lycoming V8 engine, un-cracked original dashboard casting, and pristine FWD transaxle assembly. The resulting presentation is a pristine testament to American engineering and Art Deco grandeur.
Historical Significance
The Cord 810/812 was an engineering marvel that was decades ahead of its time. By combining front-wheel drive with a unique step-down floor, Buehrig eliminated the transmission tunnel, allowing the car to sit incredibly low without running boards. Its aircraft-inspired instrument panel features a complete array of mechanical gauges, nested beautifully inside a turned-aluminum engine fascia. Built during the final economic struggles of E.L. Cord’s industrial empire, fewer than 3,000 Cords were produced across both years, making this supercharged open tourer one of the most celebrated industrial designs of the 20th century.
Auction Opportunity
Supercharged 812 open models represent the absolute apex of Cord ownership. Combining an iconic museum-grade aesthetic with the muscle of a 170-hp supercharged V8, serial number 32321H is an investment-grade masterpiece. Perfect for competitive display on global concours lawns or high-speed driving in vintage rallies like the CCCA CARavans, this automotive icon stands as a pinnacle of pre-war Americana.

The 1937 LaSalle was an engineering masterclass that helped redefine luxury transportation during the recovery years of the late 1930s. By re-introducing a Cadillac-built V8 engine at a lower price bracket, General Motors heavily promoted the line as being "completely Cadillac-built" from the ground up. Its unique visual signature—including the ultra-narrow grille, elegant pontoon fenders, and sweeping trunk profile—stood out boldly against more conservative luxury competitors of the era. The coupe body configuration perfectly captures the rakish, athletic spirit Harley Earl intended for the marquee, making it one of the most celebrated and highly drivable collector cars of the late pre-war era.
Auction Opportunity
Finding a 1937 LaSalle Coupe of this exceptional caliber is an increasingly rare occurrence, as few have been restored to such uncompromising standards. Combining its numbers-coherent Cadillac V8, an award-winning frame-off presentation, and landmark styling, chassis 2B8378 is a spectacular acquisition for any serious collector. Equally prepared to compete for trophies on a concours lawn or cruise smoothly on high-speed vintage tours, this elegant LaSalle represents the absolute apex of GM's golden age of design.

Exceptional Provenance
Chassis 5290093 boasts an impressive history file of fastidious preservation. After its early life in Florida, it eventually found its way into the legendary collection of the famed Duesenberg enthusiast Ed "Carpet King" Weaver of Dalton, Georgia, during the 1990s. Following its acquisition from the Weaver estate, the car was treated to a museum-quality, bare-metal repaint in its deeply lustrous black coat, complemented by a beautifully tailored black cloth top subtly piped in dark red leather. Great care was taken to safeguard its highly original powertrain and flawless mechanical attributes, ensuring it drives with the same silent, locomotive-like power it possessed in 1939.
Historical Significance
Cadillac’s second-generation V-16 engine was an engineering masterpiece. Unlike the heavy overhead-valve V-16 of the early 1930s, the 431 cubic-inch flathead block utilized a wider 135-degree angle, rendering it low, compact, and extraordinarily smooth. This low-profile engine allowed Harley Earl to lower the car's center of gravity and craft a remarkably sleek, imposing front fascia accented by stylized chrome grilles. Priced at a staggering $5,550 during the late Depression era, these custom-tailored masterpieces were built strictly to individual order for heads of state, industrial titans, and Hollywood royalty—solidifying their place today as the ultimate holy grail of pre-war motoring.
Auction Opportunity
Because of their extreme rarity, genuine 1938–1940 Cadillac V-16 open models are almost never offered publicly. Combining a majestic Fleetwood body, the pinnacle smooth performance of sixteen cylinders, and a bulletproof pedigree, chassis 5290093 represents a blue-chip acquisition. Whether destined to star on the lawn at Pebble Beach, anchor a world-class private museum, or whisper down the highway on a CCCA CARavan tour, this legendary motorcar stands at the absolute apex of American automotive history.
