Lot 7011: Deere & Mansur Co. Wooden Merchant Sign

This impressive and highly unusual large wooden merchant advertising sign for the Deere & Mansur Co. Field Corn Check-Row Planter was manufactured in Moline, Illinois. Measuring nearly 10 feet in length, this oversized painted sign was produced to promote one of the company’s innovative rotary corn planters during the early mechanization of American agriculture. Founded in 1877 by Charles Deere(son of John Deere) and Alvah Mansur, Deere & Mansur became one of the most important early manufacturers of corn planters and by 1899 was the largest planter manufacturer in the world. The company was eventually absorbed into Deere & Company in 1911, making surviving advertising from this earlier partnership particularly desirable. Gross operated a general merchandise store in Brunswick, Maryland, a town locally known as Berlin until its official renaming in 1890, placing the sign firmly in the late 19th century.
