Irrigation System & Upgrades (VRI & VFD Details)
This Valley Irrigator has been upgraded with approximately $41,000 in Variable Rate Irrigation and variable-frequency drive technology, providing GPS-guided, prescription-based water application and convenient remote monitoring and control. With 57 individually controlled valves across five management zones, the system can apply water more precisely where it is needed—helping conserve water, reduce unnecessary pumping, and improve irrigation management across variable field conditions.

Detailed System & Equipment Specifications

  • Variable Rate Irrigation (VRI) Technology: Equipped with a modern VRI system allowing the operator to vary the amount of water applied to different areas of the field instead of applying one uniform rate everywhere. Uses GPS positioning and a customized digital prescription map.
  • Zone & Valve Infrastructure: Installed on spans 5, 6, and 7, featuring 57 electronically controlled sprinkler valves divided into five management zones. Valves automatically adjust or turn off individual groups of sprinklers around different soil types, wet areas, low-producing ground, waterways, or boundaries.
  • Smart Control Panel: Upgraded control panel to a Valley ICON5 smart control panel with cellular connectivity, providing a modern operating interface and allowing the irrigator to be monitored and managed remotely where cellular service is available.
  • 50-HP Variable-Frequency Drive (VFD): Added a 50-horsepower VFD to manage the irrigation pump. Automatically adjusts motor speed to maintain required water pressure, providing smoother starts, consistent pressure, reduced mechanical stress, and reduced energy use.
